Although they write in different genres, James Hayman and Joan Dempsey, two award-winning Maine novelists who also happen to be good friends will be taking part in a unique conversation to discuss why important social issues play a central role in each of their books.
Dempsey’s debut, This is How it Begins, is a beautifully written literary novel about the importance of free speech and how bigotry can arise in the clash between religious freedom and civil rights.
James Hayman’s series of suspense thrillers featuring two Portland Maine detectives, Michael McCabe and Maggie Savage, are unique to the crime genre in the way they focus on serious social issues. In The Girl on the Bridge, the issue is sexual assault on college campuses. In Hayman’s latest, A Fatal
Obsession, the focus is on how frequent childhood concussions ultimately turn a bright and sensitive boy into a brutal killer.
