As part of OceanView’s Enrichment Academy, we take year-round trips into Portland on a regular basis. In addition to concierge transportation to the Portland Symphony Orchestra for both the Classical and Pops series, we travel to the Merrill Auditorium for their special events and shows as part of their Ovations! series as well.
There’s also nothing better to do on a sunny, summer day than to catch Casco Bay Line’s Mailboat Cruise, an island-hopping ferry tour which rides past lighthouses and Portland’s Fort Gorges, making stops at Little Diamond, Great Diamond, Long, Cliff and Chebeague Islands. Each summer we also take the ferry two hours north to Bailey Island, which lets us stop for lunch at Cooks Lobster House for the best and freshest seafood, and then take the relaxing ferry back to Portland.
We love visiting new exhibits at the Portland Museum of Art, Maine’s largest and oldest public art institution. Their extensive extensive collection of Winslow Homer’s works, three generations of the Wyeth family and an average of fifteen different traveling exhibits each year proves that the Museum is truly the center of Maine’s extensive arts district.
We also take classes at several local colleges, including University of Southern Maine, the headquarters of the national Osher Lifelong Learning Institute network (OLLI—formerly called Senior College), which was recently awarded the 2011 New England Higher Education State Merit Award.
The Greater Portland area provides the perfect location, boasting the cultural activities of a major metropolitan region while maintaining small town charm and accessibility.
